My “Favorite Aquarium Things” Can’t Wait for the MB Aquarium to Open!

A Fun Parody of “My Favorite Things” with an Aquarium Theme

When the Monterey Bay Aquarium closed in March 2020, as a Volunteer Monterey Bay Aquarium Guide, I was so disappointed.  My Thursday afternoon volunteer gig was the highlight of my week!

I can’t wait until we open soon!

The Aquarium staff thought they would have a little fun and created this delightful parody sung to the tune of “My Favorite Things” from the Sound of Music – only it’s “My Favorite Aquarium Things”!

Just click and give a listen, you’ll love it!

“My Favorite Aquarium Things”

Monterey Bay Aquarium Tide Pool

Song lyrics

Squids that are giant
— or common or bigfin
Hand-feeding sharks with a neoprene mitten

Avocets, penguins and albatross wings
These are our favorite Aquarium things

Sardines and anchovies — oodles and oodles
Octopus poop that
looks like one long noodle

Bat rays that swim with a flap of their wings
These are our favorite Aquarium things

Dolphinfish darting with colorful flashes
Sea otters diving and making big splashes

Delicate drifters and creatures that sting
These are our favorite Aquarium things

When the Zoom fails
When you’re muted
When the WiFi’s bad

We simply remember Aquarium things
And then we don’t feel so sad

A Mola mola that looks like a frisbee
Kelp Forests swaying and making you dizzy

Sea stars with tube feet that help them to cling
These are our favorite Aquarium things!

1222 Shafter, Pacific Grove

The charming seaside town of Pacific Grove is attracting many new residents, second home owners, and visitors for many reasons. Boasting the most beautiful coastline on the Monterey Peninsula, its natural beauty has no equal.

Spring time in Pacific Grove showcases the “Pink Carpet”!

America’s Last Home Town as it is sometimes called, also has a “down home” community feel where you know your neighbors and shopkeepers by name and you are greeted when you arrive at your favorite restaurant.

Enjoying a nice breakfast at Victorian Corner.

For those who love the ocean, the marine life is amazing.  Right off the coastline of Pacific Grove is a section of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the largest marine sanctuary in the US.

Recreation Trail follows the coastline. Outside enthusiasts enjoy biking, walking, skating, and riding the surreys.

From the Recreation Trail which runs along the coast, you can spot whales as they migrate, Harbor seals as they give birth in the spring,

Harbor seals with their newborn pups.

and a multitude of seabirds, fishes, and invertebrates, if you like to observe the tide pools. Just don’t remove any animals – it is a sanctuary! The Monterey Bay Aquarium features an underwater view of the Bay which attracts visitors from all over the world and inspires the conservation of our oceans.

Since it is such an idyllic place, real estate values have skyrocketed in the last 10 years.  Never quite as well known as its neighboring towns like Carmel and Monterey, Pacific Grove always kept a slightly lower profile. No more.  As soon as a home is listed for sale, it is purchased by an eager buyer wanting to be a part of this dream place.

The Day the Music Died ~ My Beautiful Giant Pacific Octopus ~ RIP

August 8, 2019

RIP My Beautiful Giant Pacific Octopus

As a Monterey Bay Aquarium guide and as an educator perhaps I am not supposed to get overly attached to the marine animals at the Aquarium – but I do.

Susan Clark, Monterey Bay Aquarium guide with 300+ volunteer hours

I truly grow to love them.  I love the hermit crabs, the sea otters, and even the Rock Fish, but mostly I have loved our male Giant Pacific Octopus.

Does that sound crazy?  Dog and cat lovers might think so, but I can’t help it, I love all marine animals ~ they touch my soul.

Why do I feel today like I felt on February 3, 1959 “The Day the Music Died” ?  Our beautiful male Giant Pacific Octopus passed away today and my heart is very sad.

Why I thought of that day in 1959 and that  song – I really don’t know.  All I know is that the beauty of the dance he would do when he came out to play and the music of his being is gone.

The thrill of his presence when he came out of hiding and spread his giant tentacles to say hello to our visitors is now a memory.

But wonderful memories they are and we will always remember  this extraordinary creature.

I love you my beautiful Octopus!  May you rest in peace.

We now have two lovely female Giant Pacific Octopuses at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Please come and see and experience these extraordinary animals.
