If you’ve been living on the Monterey Peninsula or even visiting the Monterey Peninsula and the Carmel area for some time, you’ve undoubtably heard about the Flanders Mansion. This is a historic home located in Hatton Fields in Carmel that is owned by the City of Carmel. The problem has been that the City can’t decide what to do with it. There have been ideas and attempts to find a way to restore this incredible home back to its former glory, but so far nothing has worked.
Enter Mike Buffo who has submitted a proposal to the City to become its curator and has great plans to guide the renovation and create an educational and artistic center to benefit our community. Mike, a videographer/producer and owner of House of 8 Media, has a well thought out plan that I would like to share with you.
In the short video below, my interview with Mike will explain the plan and also give you inside glimpses of this wonderful treasure, the Flanders Mansion. Enjoy!
To show your support of Mike Buffo’s plan to conduct a feasibility study at no cost to the City and to become the curator of Flanders Mansion, sign the petition here.

WELCOME TO CARMEL VALLEY! Have you ever walked along the coast in spring or summer and wondered why it was so cold and gloomy and gray? I love spending time on our coastline, but sometimes the “June gloom” gets a little much. Why not break tradition and move to Carmel Valley where you can have all the sunshine you want!
And I have just the home for you to consider.
Open House Sat/Sun May 27-28 1:00-4:00pm
36 Encina Drive, Carmel Valley 4BR/3BA 3,346 sq.ft. Lot size: 5.35 acres $3,095,000 Breath-taking views of the Santa Lucia mountains from this striking residence located in the sought after Miramonte neighborhood. Plus guest quarters on the lower level with a separate entrance
I asked my clients what they loved about this property, and this is what they said . . .
Living in the Monterey Bay community allows us to “pick our weather”. For many years our parents lived in Pebble Beach. They would escape to Carmel Valley to see the sunshine. We chose to turn it around! We love the warm sun of Carmel Valley!
We love the views from 36 Encina. Mornings in front of the fireplace allow us to sip our coffee as we watch the sun rise and the fingers of fog recede towards the coast. In the evenings we love to sit on the upper deck by the fire pit, sipping Pinot Noir and watching the fog roll back in!
36 Encina makes a great place for “WFH” (work from home). The downstairs office provides complete privacy, with a killer view!
Our neighbors on Encina are wonderful. We look out for each other and get together regularly to build community.
The property provides wonderful privacy while not feeling too far removed. With more than 5 acres we have plenty of room to ourselves, but we have easy access to Laureles Grade which is really convenient.
We both love to cook, and the chef’s kitchen gives us plenty of room to work together all while looking out over the valley and the mountains of Big Sur!
Our family loves the outdoors and hiking. Most weekends we are off to Garland Park or Point Lobos. there is a wonderful meadow in Garland that provides a great view of our house. We have actually, using binoculars of course, had family members hike to the meadow and wave back at us standing on the front deck!
We sometimes refer to the house as a “tree house”. We love the dramatic oaks, especially at night with the gentle lights we have installed. The property is filled with beautiful old growth trees. How we wish they could tell us the stories of all they have seen!
We also love all of the wildlife we regularly see, especially the birds. Humming birds, hawks, wild turkeys . . . you name them, we see them!

If you like living in sunshine and having a more rural atmosphere with privacy and land around you, I hope you’ll consider this spectacular property. It truly is “a gem” ! A very special residence for anyone who chooses to live here.
Call Susan for a Special Showing or come to the Open House!
For those that crave privacy, you’re not close to your neighbors.
2. On a clear day you can see forever . . .
3. Rural atmosphere, but close to great restaurants, wine tasting and shopping in the village.
4. You can soak in the spa without worrying about nosy neighbors looking over the fence.
5. You get more for your money in square footage and land than in Carmel. Home is 3,346 sq. ft. on 5.35 acres.
6. Room on your parcel for an elevated patio with fire pit and breath-taking views. You’ll feel like you’re “sitting on top of the world”!
7. You can enjoy riding on the Garland Park horse trails close by.
8. The days are bright and sunny in Carmel Valley when the Coastal area is socked in by fog, plus your flowers are happy!
9. And you can live in sunshine and still be only 15 minutes from Carmel Beach.
10. And when Mom decides to move in with you, you’ll have the perfect guest quarters for her OR you could build a separate Guest House with the extra water credits that go with this property.
Ok, that’s my case. You’re going to love this property! Come by my Open House or call me for a private showing to see for yourself!
As a realtor I often meet people who are in a period of transition from one type of home to another. In the case of seniors, as people age they often find they are in need of a different type of home than they have been living in most of their lives. Some of them choose to live in a retirement community that they purchase like Hacienda Carmel or Del Mesa. These are condominium communities ten minutes from Carmel-by-the-Sea where you purchase your own condominium and there are supporting services geared toward an aging population with activities, a dining room, exercise rooms, swimming pools and security. These communities while they offer help to their residents, are for independent living only.
Other seniors don’t wish to own their own home any longer and wish that the responsibilities of home ownership be handled by someone else. Some facilities are purely rentals and some are life care facilities that you “buy into”. Many facilities have graduated care depending on what the person needs so a person can transition from independent living to assisted living care when needed.
What’s right for you? And how do you find out what is available in areas close to you or close to your family.
SeniorAdvice.com has made this easy. It is an industry-leading senior care organization dedicated to providing tools and essential resources to help enhance the lives of older adults. Their resources provide extremely well-detailed and thorough information for families and senior citizens who are researching available care options and programs.

As a daughter I had a crash course in caring for an elderly parent who lived to the ripe old age of 97. God bless her. Luckily, it worked out so my mother was able to live with me and have her own independent space. That isn’t always possible for a senior and frankly sometimes it is not ideal. A senior community can offer many social aspects and activities that living at home with family doesn’t.
As a realtor I have represented numerous seniors who were transitioning from a residential home on the Monterey Peninsula to an independent living situation or a care facility. I take pride in the fact that not only can I provide representation to make sure that they get the highest possible price for their home, but also, I have a whole “rolodex” of resources and vendors that can help seniors make that transition easily – and I am there too “with my sleeves rolled up”.
Helen and Dean were two such people who I represented in the sale of their home in Pebble Beach. They had decided it was time to simplify and move into one of the Retirement Homes in Pacific Grove. The picture below shows my husband, Allan, and I along with Helen and Dean celebrating the closing of their Pebble Beach home at Roy’s at the Inn at Spanish Bay Resort.
They were so sweet and wrote me the nicest letter about our experience together.
“It has been several weeks since we sold our home in Pebble Beach. I want to again express our appreciation for your friendly and professional service as our agent for the sale. We are happy in our new home and speak often of the quick responses and helpful suggestions to our questions. We look back in wonder at the several professionals you provided for estate sales, charity donations, cleaning and hauling, inspections, escrow services, and closing procedures . We were quite anxious about selling our home that we owned for 28 years, but you made the whole process “without drama” and did everything you said you would do. We are sincerely grateful and would be very pleased to recommend you to anyone contemplating buying or selling their home.”

Since my experience caring for my mother into her late 90’s, I feel I am very qualified to meet the special needs of a senior selling their home to transition into another living situation. If you are thinking of making a change, please call me so I can advise you of our local options and don’t forget to make use of the Senioradvice.com web site which has a plethora of information on this subject.
Call me if I can help you find the next step in your journey!
