AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament 2017 ~ Pebble Beach CA

AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament 2017 Feb 6th- 12th

SAVE THE DATE  Pebble Beach will soon be over run with thousands of golf enthusiasts ready to see some great golf and also catch a view of some of the celebrities that will be playing this  year.  190,000 spectators are expected to crowd into Pebble Beach in early February to see who will take the crown away from the defending champion, Vaughn Taylor.

Millions of TV viewers will also get the thrill of viewing the beautiful coastline of Pebble Beach as seen from the Goodyear Blimp – in addition to watching the professionals and celebrities maneuver the three courses where the tournament is played.  Spyglass Hill Golf Course is rated one of the toughest courses in the world, but the Monterey Country Club Shore Course and the Pebble Beach Golf Links thrill the golfers and spectators alike with the amazing views from those courses.

Huey Lewis

Many of the celebrities playing this year are the “usual suspects” like Huey Lewis, Kenny G, Andy Garcia, Wayne Gretzky, Chris O’Donnell, Justin Timberlake, Steve Young, Ray Romano and, of course, Bill Murray who somehow is able to do a comedy act while playing amazing golf.  Speaking of Ray Romano, in 2013 I had kind of a humorous exchange with Ray – check out my March 7,  2013 entry in my archives of this blog to read a funny story.

My husband and I have been coming to the AT&T for many, many years – in fact, I came to the tournament more often when I lived in San Francisco.  Now I just like to catch some of the practice rounds.

As is tradition, I’m sure my husband and his friend Bob will be out on the course again this year.  They love to watch the practice rounds and then go play golf on one of the local courses.  So whether you go to the tournament or just watch it on TV – enjoy.  It’s  a great tournament that raises millions for local charities.

This photo epitomizes the AT&T Pro Am experience.  Picturesque holes, golfers photographed with the back drop  of the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful white sands of Carmel Beach.  When my husband and I lived in San Francisco we came down to the AT&T numerous times.  The weather was often cold and foggy or rainy,  but we didn’t care.  I don’t know if it’s global warming or not, but the last five years the weather has been much better in the beginning of February and we often now enjoy sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures.

Now that we’ve lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 17 years we still love to watch the golf tournament, but now sometimes it’s from the couch.

The AT&T Pro Am Golf tournament that started as the “Crosby Clambake” 79 years ago to raise money for charity never fails to bring thousands of visitors to the Monterey Peninsula hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities on the course where the greens meet the sea.

Over the years playing to the camera have been celebs like Ray Romano, Kevin Costner, Chris O’Donnell, Andy Garcia, Bill Murray, Huey Lewis,Kenny G, Don Johnson, and Clint Eastwood.  Added to the mix are sports figures from many sports including  football and baseball stars.

Millions of dollars are raised every year at the tournament which are distributed by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to numerous charitable organizations.  In 2015  a total of 9.1 million dollars was awarded to local non-profits in the tri-county area in that year alone.

The tournament is played on three courses; Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shores Course, and Pebble Beach Golf Links. On Saturday, most of the celebrities play on the  world renown Pebble Beach Golf Links where they are photographed and interviewed as golf enthusiasts watch from the course or from home.

When the weather is sunny and gorgeous, you couldn’t ask for a better advertisement to promote the beautiful Pebble Beach area as seen from the Goodyear Blimp.

Happy #Groundhog Day ~ #AT&T Pro Am Pebble Beach

Happy Groundhog Day! February 2nd 2016
Happy Groundhog Day! February 2nd 2016

Happy Groundhog Day, my dear readers!  Talking about Groundhog Day brings me back to my teaching days when every holiday and event on the calendar became a teaching opportunity and something to talk about other than readin’, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic  . . . and it always rated a new Bulletin Board!

The tradition of this day goes back centuries and even to the ancient Romans.  The early European Christians celebrated Candlemas Day Feb 2nd celebrating Mary’s ritual purification.  If the sun came out that day, there would be 6 more weeks of winter.  The Europeans watched the hibernating animals like bears and badgers as a tip off to winter’s end.  When the Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1880’s they started keeping an eye on the groundhog as a harbinger of a possible early spring.

And so, the American tradition began and now February 2nd brings the most-watched weather forecast of the year—and the only one led by a rodent.

Legend has it that on this morning, if a groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it cannot see its shadow, spring is on the way.

Speaking of Pennsylvania, “Punxsutawney, PA is home to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, the organization we associate with Groundhog Day due to their iconic tradition of getting dressed up in suits and tails for the annual prediction. Its first celebration was on February 2, 1887 on Gobbler’s Knob, a hill in the city where the prognostication has taken place every year since.  Early on it was just a small ceremony in Punxsutawney attended by locals. Now the prognosticating of their mascot, Punxsutawney Phil, is broadcast all over the world.”*

It’s impossible to talk about Groundhog Day without thinking of Bill Murray’s iconic movie entitled “Groundhog Day“.  Murray plays a weatherman out to cover the annual emergence of the groundhog from its hole in Punxsutawney PA.  He gets caught in a blizzard that he didn’t predict and finds himself trapped in a time warp living the same day over and over and over again until he gets it right.

He appears opposite the lovely Andi McDowell in the movie which I’m sure will be playing on all the movie channels tonight.

Living on the #Monterey Peninsula with the #AT&TProAmGolf Tournament about to begin in Pebble Beach, it’s impossible to think of past tournaments without thinking of Bill Murray and his antics on the course.  He was always the live wire who kept it fun for the spectators – from his crazy hats to his hilarious stunts.

In fact, he was horsing around so much with one lady spectator one year she fell into the sand trap!

 The fans all loved him.

As I look at the celebrity list of the 2016 golf participants I see Kenny G, Andy Garcia, Huey Lewis, Chris O’Donnell, Mark Wahlberg, Ray Romano (more about him in a future post), but NO #Bill Murray.  Perhaps another “character” will emerge from the line-up to take his place – but he is a hard act to follow.

The #2016 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament will be played in Pebble Beach February 8-14 beginning with practice rounds on the 8th.  The actual tournament will be played from Feb 11th – 14th.  If you are not able to come to the tournament in person catch the televised Saturday play when all the celebrities will be playing on Pebble Beach Golf Links.  You’ll be able to not only see great golf, but you’ll get to experience the amazing views and what we that live here get to experience every day.  Who knows, it might even encourage you to move here!

Memories of the 2013 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament – Pebble Beach (Part 2) Ray Romano Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Ray Romano between a rock and a hard place.

Ray Romano trying to get out of the sand trap

As the hardy ones who sat out on the patio with cool temperatures and cloudy skies we buttoned our down vests and waited for the next golfers to appear at this year’s AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament.  First, a golf ball landed in the sand trap in front of us and then a marshal made his way through the rough and placed an orange flag by the ball in the trap.  Uh, oh . . .someone’s in trouble.  Then, making his way towards the trap to check out the location of the ball was Ray Romano.  Ray is slight of build and not nearly as tall as he appears on his TV show.  As he looked at the golf ball he saw it was wedged close to a rock.   I can imagine what he was saying to himself since there was no way he could hit that ball where it was located.  Getting the nod that it was OK to move the rock, he tried, but the stubborn rock would not budge.  He looked around and a fellow hurried over and helped him move the rock.

He took his shot.  Ohhhh . . . into the sand again.  As he diagnosed the situation he realized he needed to walk all around the sand trap in order to enter leaving the least amount of tracks for his caddy to rake over.  As he walked right past us he glanced our way and I gave a silent wave.  He said, “I’ll get out of here eventually.”  Little did he know at the time how challenging it would be.

He wasn’t about to land in the sand again so this next time he swung with determination . . . this time his ball sailed over the green, hit a tree high and his ball fell into a heavy rough.  Sometimes you just have a bad hole!  Luckily Eric Compton, his pro partner, had a better score on the hole.  No need for Ray to go on suffering.  The marshal picked up his ball from the very deep grass and handed it to Ray.  As the group left the hole, we waved to Ray and hoped his next hole would be so much better in the 2013 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament.
