Astronauts, Astronomers, and Academics ~ Pebble Beach Authors & Ideas Festival

Pebble Beach Authors & Ideas Festival 2016  at Stevenson School, Pebble Beach

What a great idea Cindy and Jim McGillen had 10 years ago to create a venue for great minds to come together and share their intriguing ideas. Twenty-seven plus nationally renowned authors and innovators gathered in Pebble Beach this weekend to share their knowledge and great ideas with the participants.  The attendees were generous sponsors of the festival, paying guests, and educators who were invited as guests.  I was lucky enough to be one of the volunteers helping with the event so I was able to hear many of the speakers when I wasn’t on duty..

Secretary Leon Panetta kicked off the festival with a thought provoking speech on Friday night.  Prior to serving as the 23rd Secretary of Defense, Panetta (a local Carmel Valley resident) served as the Director of the CIA, White House Chief of Staff,  Director of OMB, and before that a Congressman in the House of Representatives from 1977-1993.  The amphitheater was packed with an enthusiastic audience.

Student presenters

Thousands of school children of Monterey County participated in the Student Ideas Festival thanks to the Carmel Ideas Foundation.  Some students were also given the honor to be student presenters introducing each speaker as they came onto the stage.  What an opportunity for students to have such an amazing experience!

Presentations took place in several different venues.  Speaking here in  the outdoor amphitheater is John Hennessy.  After a 16 year term as president of Stanford University he is being hailed as transformational after remaking the university from the inside out.

He is now the founding director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars program designed to lure the best students in the world for graduate education at Stanford with the goal of “doing good for the world”.

The other venues included a large auditorium and small break out sessions in classrooms.

Cara Hale Alter was a popular speaker who has provided training to the world’s leading companies and top-100 law firms.  She teaches how to project confidence and competence.  Don’t miss buying her book on the subject complete with video demonstrations!  Just as an aside story about Cara, she and I both recognized each other when she checked in at the registration desk, but couldn’t figure out how we knew each other.  We finally figured out she had been  my Jazz Dance instructor 25+ years ago in San Francisco!

Dr. Bernie Roth was very interesting and a kick to listen to.  He is a Stanford professor who is the Rodney H. Adams Professor of Engineering and is also a  co-founder of Stanford’s “d-school” which teaches “design thinking”.   Early this year I completed Stanford University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Certification program which included a day at Stanford learning all about design thinking so I was very interested in what he had to say.

His book, The Achievement Habit is a “Don’t Miss” read.

The authors all had book signings in the bookstore and there were long lines of people clutching their books in hand for a personal moment with the authors to get a personalized autograph.

Authors signing their books for eager readers.
Authors L-Hampton Sides and R-Peter Ricchiuti signing their books for eager readers.

The amazing array of authors is just too long to include in a short blog entry.  There was Dan Buettner who discovered the Blue Zones where there is the highest concentration of centenarians; Kathlyn Cooney, an archaeologist who has researched ancient Egypt; Professor Andrew Fraknoi, who makes astronomy a joy to learn about, and Mas Matsumoto, an organic peach and grape farmer who had written about the family succession on a family farm.

There were so many more stunning presentations with great ideas flowing that there isn’t room to talk about them all.  Just make a note in your calendar to come next year last weekend in September to the

2017 Pebble Beach Authors and Ideas Festival.

Happy #Groundhog Day ~ #AT&T Pro Am Pebble Beach

Happy Groundhog Day! February 2nd 2016
Happy Groundhog Day! February 2nd 2016

Happy Groundhog Day, my dear readers!  Talking about Groundhog Day brings me back to my teaching days when every holiday and event on the calendar became a teaching opportunity and something to talk about other than readin’, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic  . . . and it always rated a new Bulletin Board!

The tradition of this day goes back centuries and even to the ancient Romans.  The early European Christians celebrated Candlemas Day Feb 2nd celebrating Mary’s ritual purification.  If the sun came out that day, there would be 6 more weeks of winter.  The Europeans watched the hibernating animals like bears and badgers as a tip off to winter’s end.  When the Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1880’s they started keeping an eye on the groundhog as a harbinger of a possible early spring.

And so, the American tradition began and now February 2nd brings the most-watched weather forecast of the year—and the only one led by a rodent.

Legend has it that on this morning, if a groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it cannot see its shadow, spring is on the way.

Speaking of Pennsylvania, “Punxsutawney, PA is home to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, the organization we associate with Groundhog Day due to their iconic tradition of getting dressed up in suits and tails for the annual prediction. Its first celebration was on February 2, 1887 on Gobbler’s Knob, a hill in the city where the prognostication has taken place every year since.  Early on it was just a small ceremony in Punxsutawney attended by locals. Now the prognosticating of their mascot, Punxsutawney Phil, is broadcast all over the world.”*

It’s impossible to talk about Groundhog Day without thinking of Bill Murray’s iconic movie entitled “Groundhog Day“.  Murray plays a weatherman out to cover the annual emergence of the groundhog from its hole in Punxsutawney PA.  He gets caught in a blizzard that he didn’t predict and finds himself trapped in a time warp living the same day over and over and over again until he gets it right.

He appears opposite the lovely Andi McDowell in the movie which I’m sure will be playing on all the movie channels tonight.

Living on the #Monterey Peninsula with the #AT&TProAmGolf Tournament about to begin in Pebble Beach, it’s impossible to think of past tournaments without thinking of Bill Murray and his antics on the course.  He was always the live wire who kept it fun for the spectators – from his crazy hats to his hilarious stunts.

In fact, he was horsing around so much with one lady spectator one year she fell into the sand trap!

 The fans all loved him.

As I look at the celebrity list of the 2016 golf participants I see Kenny G, Andy Garcia, Huey Lewis, Chris O’Donnell, Mark Wahlberg, Ray Romano (more about him in a future post), but NO #Bill Murray.  Perhaps another “character” will emerge from the line-up to take his place – but he is a hard act to follow.

The #2016 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament will be played in Pebble Beach February 8-14 beginning with practice rounds on the 8th.  The actual tournament will be played from Feb 11th – 14th.  If you are not able to come to the tournament in person catch the televised Saturday play when all the celebrities will be playing on Pebble Beach Golf Links.  You’ll be able to not only see great golf, but you’ll get to experience the amazing views and what we that live here get to experience every day.  Who knows, it might even encourage you to move here!

Ringing that Bell in Carmel CA!

What a great way to start a morning!  This Thursday morning was “Realtor Day” and as an Alain Pinel Realtors’ volunteer, I took my place in front of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Post Office and rang the bell for donations for the Salvation Army.  People were so nice and so generous I decided this was something I would like to do every year.  Holiday time is a time to have gratitude for all the blessings we have and to be generous to others who are in need.  The Salvation Army helps those in need year round.  Many people stopped to chat.  Some told me they used to ring the bell themselves and one woman told me how the Salvation Army had helped her when she was in need as she stuffed my kettle with bills.

Good morning!, Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Thank you! kept flying out of my mouth.  By the end of the two hours I was on a “holiday high”!  See you next year at this time . . . I’ll be ringing my bell!

Cooking for Solutions Make It Sustainable Weekend ~ Monterey Bay Aquarium

October 4th at the Aquarium
October 4th at the Aquarium 7:00pm

Lots happening in Monterey at the Monterey Bay Aquarium tonight.  Culminating two days of Cooking for Solutions events, tonight it’s party time!   It’s cool to respect our oceans and the sea life that live there.  It’s been a passion of mine to “save our oceans” all my life.  Thank goodness it is now the “cool thing to do” so everyone gets involved.  Although great damage has already been done, it’s not too late to become stewards of our oceans and Monterey Bay.  Tonight at the Monterey Bay Aquarium hundreds will learn how to live the ocean-friendly lifestyle sampling fun culinary experiences created by celebrity chef Alton Brown and 50 local restaurants.  It’s a party!  Yummy food, wine and beer from local wineries and breweries, and dancing in the shadow of a whale!  See you there!
